At Churchfield, inclusion is the lifeblood of our school and we work tirelessly to ensure that every child can grow, achieve and shine.
We support children’s communication and interaction needs in a number of ways as they are a key component of child development and the need to communicate effectively is paramount. High quality teaching and accessing a broad and balanced curriculum promotes communication and interaction development with additional provision such as personalised speech and language intervention, Language Link and our TEACCH provision. We use a variety of strategies and unique approaches to ensure that communication is fostered between all of our children.
More Information
See below for more information about how we support our pupils with communication and interaction needs:
Quality First Provision
We offer quality first teaching that develops communication skills promoting opportunities for speaking and listening and communicating effectively across a broad and creative curriculum and we offer a coherent whole school approach including monitoring, evaluation, identifying next steps and impact. We use environmental supports such as visual cues including timetables, first and then boards, choose boards and task boards.
SALT Provision
We have 2 Speech and Language provision Practitioners who are ELKLAN Level 3 trained. Our practitioners work alongside Speech and Language Therapists delivering personalised programmes as part of a bespoke package of care. We ensure transfer and generalisation of skill and our practitioners liaise regularly with class teachers and support staff to monitor the impact of the interventions, ensuring staff support SLCN universally.
Infant Language Link
ILL is an innovative online package used to identify and support children with mild to moderate SLCN. Our Language Link and Elklan trained staff assess deliver and then track impact using a set of progress measures. They plan and resource interventions for a graduated approach with high quality teaching strategies that allow staff to support SLCN universally.
TEACCH Provision
Our TEACCH Provision is led by a trained TEACCH Practitioner. The provision offers a structured teaching model which enables pupils with social communication needs/ASD and other additional needs to understand their environments and work independently enabling access to quality first teaching alongside their peers, and then transferring these skills into the classroom as part of everyday routines.
Communication Friendly
We are very proud to be recognised as an ELKLAN Communication Friendly setting. The accreditation is awarded to settings that have trained and support all their staff in communication and language development. They will also have shown evidence of embedding this knowledge in targeted interventions such as Time to Talk, 101 Social Skills, Socially Speaking, Music Interaction, Intensive Interaction and Lego Therapy.

Our aim is to remove barriers to learning and participation in order to provide additional, and different to, provision to meet individual needs where required.
